About Peta – Family Therapy & Counselling

Academically, I have completed a Masters of Social Work and prior to that, a Bachelor of Social Work and a Bachelor of Arts (major in Psychology) all at the University of Queensland.

The focus of my working life has been two fold; clinical practice and teaching systemic family therapy.

1. Clinical Practice

Private Practice

I have been providing counselling and family therapy services at the same rooms in Ballow Chambers since 1990.

Some of the agencies where I have provided consultancy, training, facilitation and professional services on more than a casual basis include;

  • Child and Youth Mental Health Service (QH)
  • Independent Living Program
  • Save the Children Fund
  • Disability Services Queensland
  • Department of Communities
  • Child Development Unit (QH)
  • Department of Child Safety
  • Evolve Therapeutic Services
  • Bayside Child Protection Partnership
  • Zig Zag

Additionally I provide professional services to individuals seeking to reflect on their work and discuss creative ideas for improving their practice.

Prior to Private Practice

I have had the benefit of working in a wide variety of agencies including:

  • Abused Child Trust
  • Family Court of Australia
  • Stress Management Unit (Queensland Teachers Union Health Society)
  • Womens Health Centre
  • Winston Noble Psychiatric Unit
  • Princess Alexandra Hospital

2. Teaching Family Therapy

Teaching family therapy has been my other passion. My main endeavors in this domain have been:

Queensland Family Therapy Training Group

From 1990 to 1999 I collaborated with my friend and colleague Paul Gibney as co-director of the Queensland Family Therapy Training Group. During this time the Group offered a 3 level training program. As a result of the success of the training program, in 2000, the Queensland Family Therapy Training Group was invited by the University of Queensland to incorporate the training program as a University course. All of 2000 was devoted to formalising courseware and gaining accreditation for the course as the Masters of Counselling.

University of Queensland

From 2001 to 2007 I delivered the Masters of Counselling course in parallel with maintaining my private practice.

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists

Since 2000 I have presented the family therapy component of the Advanced Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Also, since 2009 I have presented the basic family therapy component to psychiatry registrars.

Other Training

From time to time I have delivered subjects at Griffith University and training at agencies such as Queensland Health.
